How we can open up dialogues on ‘Shakespeares in Asias’ between scholars in Asia? Many of the works on Shakespeare performances in Asia are meant to expound their meanings to Western readers/audiences, while using the conventional (western) critical and analytical languages of performance studies or literary studies. Yet have we, scholars working on Shakespeares in Asia, shared enough information, knowledge, vocabulary, or academic achievements among us? When we look ‘east’ or look at other Asian Shakespeares, we will gain more insights into the study of localised Shakespeares of our countries than we study western counterparts. By focusing upon some Shakespearean performances in Asia, the panel will see how we can work on other Asian Shakespeares, what contribution can we make by discussing Shakespearean performances of different countries/cultural backgrounds in Asia, or what kind of vocabulary/language can we use and share when discussing Asian Shakespeares. The primary aim of this panel is not to ‘ghettoise Asian Shakespeares,’ but to develop the possibilities of more participation by scholars working on the studies of Shakespeare in performance in Asia.
